Free cooling – your natural summer cooling

With free cooling, your home stays pleasantly cool throughout the summer – without the need for air conditioning. The heat pump itself does not need to be running. Only the brine pump and heating circulation pump remain in operation, which means free cooling requires very little energy and is a highly cost-effective solution.

How does free cooling work?

Free cooling involves geothermal probe and groundwater heat pumps. Cool water is circulated through the underfloor heating system, removing around 2–4 °C of heat from the indoor spaces. The heat is then transferred back into the ground and, in the case of geothermal probe heat pumps, stored there. The heat pump can draw on the stored heat again during the colder months, further enhancing overall efficiency.

How much does free cooling cost?

In free cooling mode, electricity consumption remains minimal. For a single-family home, the average annual cost is around CHF 40, based on an electricity price of 26 centimes per kilowatt-hour. Compared with conventional air conditioning systems, free cooling is therefore a particularly easy, efficient and cost-effective way to keep indoor temperatures pleasantly lower.
